2018 Okawa Prize Commemorative Symposium
 

International Symposium titled ” Evolution of VCSEL Photonics - Present and Future -” in commemoration of winning the Okawa Prize was held on November 8th, 2018 at Kuramae Hall, Tokyo Institute of Technology. The Symposium was co-organized by Tokyo Tech World Research Hub Initiative and the Okawa Foundation.

The symposium started with screening the introducing film of the Okawa Foundation and the opening remarks by Dr. Takayasu Okushima, President of the Okawa Foundation, Dr. Kenichi Iga, councilor of the Okawa Foundation / Past President and Professor Emeritus of Tokyo Institute of Technology, and Dr. Osamu Watanabe, Vice President of Tokyo Institute of Technology. Then the 2018 Okawa Prize winners, Dr. Constance Chang-Hasnain (Associate Dean for Strategic Alliances, College of Engineering, John R. Whinnery Distinguished Chair Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, University of California, Berkeley) and Dr. Fumio Koyama (Director-General, Institute of Innovative Research, Professor, Laboratory for Future Interdisciplinary Research of Science and Technology, Tokyo Institute of Technology) gave commemorative lectures, titled “VCSELs enabling a brave new 3D world” by Dr. Chang-Hasnain and “VCSEL Photonics for communications and 3D sensing” by Dr. Koyama.

After the commemorative lectures, leading industrial researchers in the field of optical interconnect and optical sensor from the world gave speeches on the topic of VCSELs.

In the banquet after the symposium, participants enjoyed talking each other to foster their relationship and deepen academic discussion.
