International Symposium on Future of High Performance Green Computing honoring the achievements of 2017 Okawa Prize winners was held on March 8th, 2018 at Green Computing Systems Research and Development Center, Waseda University. The Symposium was co-organized by Frontier of Embodiment Informatics: ICT and Robotics, Waseda University, Advanced Multicore Processor Research Institute, Waseda University and the Okawa Foundation and sponsored by IEEE Computer Society Japan Chapter, IEEE Computer Society Multicore STC, and The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation.

The symposium started with the opening remarks by Dr. Takayasu Okushima, President of the Okawa Foundation and Dr. Shuji Hashimoto, Vice President of Waseda University. Then one of the 2017 Okawa Prize winner Dr. David J. Kuck (Intel Fellow / Professor Emeritus, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) who is a pioneer of parallel computing technology gave a keynote speech titled “Six Solvable System Challenges.”

After the keynote speech, prestigious speakers from the world gave speeches on the topic of High Performance Green Computing. Speakers include; Dr. Hironori Kasahara (Professor, Waseda University / 2018 IEEE Computer Society President), Dr. David Padua (Professor, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign), Dr. Vladmir Getov (Professor, Westminster University), Dr. Peter Braam (President, Braam Research / Researcher, Cambridge University) and Dr. Jaejin Lee (Professor, Seoul National University).

The second half of the symposium opened with introduction of the Okawa Prize and 2017 winners by Dr. Yuichiro Anzai, chairman of the Okawa Prize selection committee (President, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Executive Advisor for Academic Affairs and Past President, Keio University). Then followed a round-table discussion in which Dr. Kuck and other five speakers participated as panelists. They had active exchanges of professional opinions including QA from the audience.

After the symposium, a banquet was held at RIHGA Royal Hotel Tokyo. Following opening remarks by Dr. Katsuhiko Shirai (Past President, Waseda University) and Dr. Shigeki Sugano (Dean and Professor, School of Creative Science and Engineering, Waseda University), and toast by Dr. Yasuhiko Yasuda, Chairman of Board of Councillors, the Okawa Foundation and member of the Okawa Prize selection committee (Professor Emeritus, Waseda University and The University of Tokyo), participants enjoyed talking each other to foster their relationship and deepen academic discussion. With the closing remark by Mr. Takuji Matsumoto, Senior Managing Director of the Okawa Foundation, the symposium was successfully ended.
